Our Apologies!

Several have contacted us requesting a copy of our seminar schedule in order to pray for our ministry and us. We very greatly appreciate that prayer and those who pray for us. Normally our seminar schedule is included in our Creation Compass Newsletter, which we had been mailing out about twice a year. However, last July our computer’s hard drive went on the fritz and there was no up-to-date backup copy of the mailing list. But thanks be to God! Donna’s brother, Lloyd Wright, has now been able to recover the mailing list data from the hard drive disk. Our apologies for missing an edition of the newsletter.

Fact vs. Reality

A recent book (October 2000) titled Icons of Evolution: Science or Myth? by Jonathan Wells is causing quite a reaction in scientific and educational circles. A news release about the book states, "In this shocking book, Berkeley-educated doctor of biology Jonathan Wells lets you in on scientific discoveries you won’t learn about from college and high school textbooks - and reveals a dirty little secret known only to some of his fellow biologists." In his book, some of the things Dr. Wells reveals are:

bullet

How scientists have long known that drawings supposedly showing similarities between fish and human embryos were faked, yet continue to use them as evidence for evolution;

bullet

How Darwin’s theory of natural selection is illustrated with staged photographs showing moths on tree trunks where they don’t actually rest;

bullet

How the alleged role of mutations in evolution is illustrated with artificially engineered fruit flies that show the opposite of what evolutionary theory requires.

It is apparent why this book is causing quite a reaction. Icons of Evolution is clearly written and a pleasure to read. It is readily understandable even for readers with minimal science background. Even though it is a non-religious book, it fits so well with topics in our seminars that we will make the book available on our book tables during seminars.

It can also be ordered from our web site.

Darwin’s Finches and Evolution

The several varieties of finches on the Galapagos Islands are cited by evolutionists as support for evolutionism. Darwin studied these finches, so they are often referred to as "Darwin’s" finches. At various locations and environments on the Galapagos Islands the birds have varied physical characteristics such as beak shape, or size of the males compared to the females. Evolutionists have claimed that such variation came about as a result of a process of evolution. However, by definition, the process of evolution is the generation of new genetic material with higher information in the genetic code. Newer studies on finches have shown that wide variation in the genetic code already is present in finches. Variations in physical characteristic result not from new genetic information, but from variations in habitat to which the birds adapt. Birds on the Galapagos Islands with larger beaks will revert to smaller beaks if their habitat is changed and vice versa. (G. H. Harper, "Speciation or irruption: The significance of the Darwin Finches" Creation Research Society Quarterly December 1981, p. 171-175.)

Also a recent study published in the journal Science (January 11, 2002) shows that the size of finches depends on habitat. Birds all from the same original source have undergone remarkable change in just 30 years. In Montana, females are big and males small. In Alabama however, male finches are larger and females smaller. The hatching order of a nest of eggs determines the size of adult birds. In warmer Alabama, males hatch first and become larger.

Prayer Answers

"Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full." (John 16:24) Any ministry, including Creation Compass, can only be truly effective as it is bathed in prayer. We are truly grateful for those who hold us up in prayer. We can sense when special prayer is being make for us. Since our last newsletter, three events especially stand out as answers to prayer. One was a camp for families held at Echo Lake in Saskatchewan, near Regina. Among those present were people from Alberta and Manitoba, as well as Saskatchewan. There was a spiritual unity and fellowship among those attending. Even the youth formed a happy bond with one another, even though some had never met previously. The camp was sponsored by Creation Science Association of Saskatchewan (Garry Miller, president).

Two other events which stand out were presentations at public high schools. The basic message given at each school concerned implications of creationism and evolutionism for who man is. If man just evolved from an animal, which came from goo in the ocean, which came from a "big bang", which came from nowhere, all by chance, then man is just junk. Man is no different from a handful of dirt! If on the other hand man was created, then each person is special and not just junk. The Creator does not make junk. That message has a powerful impact on students, and even teachers. Thank you for praying!
